  • CSE

Septemeber 2023 NEWS - 'Life choices programme delivered to RUFC'

In September, we have introduced 2 brand new programmes: 'Spiking' and 'Life Choices'.

Spiking

Due to an increase in the frequency of spiking incidents in South Yorkshire, we have introduced this new programme to help educate young people as to the dangers of spiking and to do our best to make young people feel safer on a night out. We have received our first booking for the programme, which we hope will be the first of many, as this is essential knowledge for young people.

Life Choices

Our new 'Life Choices' programme has been designed to help build the knowledge of professionals, to make them feel more comfortable with their own programme delivery. We have prepared a 6 day course , within which we cover 6 different types of crime, all of which provide an ever- evolving challenge, in terms of how to educate others on them.

We have now run the first 3 days of the course to professionals from Rotherham United Community Trust.

Septemeber 2023 NEWS-

'New Hall'

Successful visit to New Hall Prison delivering a lived experience talk  joined by our Trauma Informed Practitioner Enrika and University Student Mia.

Our aim of this visit was to empower women and show them that just because they are in prison, life does not end there and that with the correct support upon release they can go on to lead a successful and fulfilling life.

Future plans are to deliver to prisons all over the country to support women on their upcoming release.

Feedback from Instructional Officer at HMP New Hall Alex Plews:

"At HMP New Hall, in the Employment Hub, we had Karen Howell-Ball deliver a fantastic lived experience talk to the women. The women found it empowering and most of them could relate to Karen's life. The Employment Hub is not just about creating a CV, it's about getting your mindset ready to be employed."

Women's Feedback From HMP New Hall :

"Hi I thought it was almost identical to my own story and very informative she was very open, honest and surprisingly well considering everything herself and family has gone through, but I'm not going to lie it's seems like history is definitely cycle of abuse from her mum,  to her, to her kids I hope they can cut the cycle I wish her and family all the best in the future. If you could Let her know thanks for her family."

"I think Karen’s life story was inspiring, inspirational, & most off all amazing, her & her partner should be so proud of their selves and how far they have come and it shows that no matter how bad or how much you think you can’t change your life around, that you actually can and that if you really want something and if you really want to change and do better you can. :) also shows you that if you seek and ask for help there is help there. Also made me believe in myself and told me that I can, and I have got this. I’d like to thank Karen for coming it’s really made a difference for me knowing and listening to her and her life story. can I have more info about her support and the women she works with please. Thanks."

success story

It's moments like this that really makes us proud to do what we do.

When this pupil first started with us, this shy student in Year 10 was facing school exclusion and a difficult home life.

Upon attending our centre, she showed an interest in both the salon and music studio.

Eventually coming out of her shell, she began writing and recording songs alongside gaining vocational skills in the beauty salon.

Fast forward 2 years and here she is, finished secondary school, enrolled at Chesterfield College and here is a snap of her performing live last Thursday, at Crystal Bar in Sheffield City Centre.

We're so excited for this star pupil's bright future and we couldn't be more proud of how she has progressed.

Autumn Update

As we come to the end of the first term of the academic year, our Youth Music/Arts Council England/National Lottery backed music programme I2C Next Up is starting up nicely.

We have learned so much from our learners as we explore what being a musician looks like to them and we look to the near future as they experience writing, recording and performing their music.

Watch this space for upcoming stars of the Sheffield music scene.

Happy new year

It’s a new year and a nearly new In2Change, the team has expanded vastly, and the building continues to undergo improvements, developing far beyond where we were this time last year.

Last month, in December, community service teams completed the refurbishment of our main presentation room as we hosted the South Yorkshire Community Foundation, South Yorkshire 100: Building Sustainable Communities event. Alongside The South Yorkshire Violence Reduction Unit. Another opportunity for us to showcase everything In2Change delivers, raising our profile and helping us to reach more people who will benefit from our work.

To close out the calendar year, we had a visit from some of Sheffield’s High Court Judges. They had a tour of our centre and we discussed ways in which the work we do, can divert people away from situations leading to the work the Judges do.

After another year of uncertainty in the pandemic, In2Change continues with a bigger team than ever, ready to make 2022 a bigger year than ever.

Thank you to all who have supported In2Change in 2021, Happy New Year.

November news

Another eventful month at In2Change, this November.

On the 4th, we hosted the “Seeing is Believing” event. We were able to showcase all the programmes and activities our centre hosts and raise the profile of the charity amongst some esteemed guests, including The High Sherriff, The Master Cutler and some very high profile guests.

The event was catered by the staff taken on as part of the government's Kickstart scheme for our newly opened in-house café, Rodwell’s. Which launched in the mid November. This community café serves freshly made sandwiches and coffee Monday to Thursday 9am til 2:30pm.

Towards the end of October and into early November, In2Change partnered with South Yorkshire Police to deliver a new project; “Dark Nights” The In2Change team were out on the streets of Rotherham engaging with young people gathering in parks and on the street. The In2Change team gained valuable insight into the issues young people face and their ideas for how to improve their local area as they voiced their opinions.

Finally, as November draws to a close. In2Change has taken on 7 medical students from the university of Sheffield. The students were split into groups and given a subject to cover in an in-depth study. The subjects are : Trauma Informed Practise, Anti-Social Behaviour and The North Eastern areas of Sheffield. The students on the latter subjects went on a visit to the North East parts of Sheffield, liaising with local police, gaining an insight into the social and economic issues in these areas.

These reports, once completed by the University of Sheffield Students, will aid In2Change in developing future programmes to be delivered around South Yorkshire.

Front page news

Over the weekend, In2Change was featured on the front page of The Sheffield Star.

The story covered the transformation of Rutland hall and its long history. Drawing comparisons to the work that took place then and the activities that happen now.

The Helen Wilson Settlement first came to Rutland Hall in 1906, a community organisation promoting cultural, recreational and educational activities.

Now in 2021, Brian Wreakes, promotes cultural, recreation, educational and vocational activities, helping to re-engage young people into education and at the same time provide opportunities for ex-offenders and people with lived experience, looking to make a change in their communities.
